Zeyi Liu is from Shijiazhuang, China. She is a sophomore studying Computer Science at Columbia University with interests in urban air pollution and sustainable development. She is currently working on the Urban Composition project and she is building a website to visualize research data dynamically. She would love to explore the cross section of environmental science and computer science and she hopes to use her computer science skills to solve environmental science problems. Outside of class, she enjoys coding, hiking, reading detective stories, and listening to K-pop!
Tamanna Chowdhury is a senior at Columbia University majoring in Climate Systems Science with a minor in Statistics. For her senior thesis, she is evaluating the ZAPPA tool, a high-resolution platform for estimating ZIP code–level air quality, with a focus on PM2.5. Her research compares ZAPPA’s outputs to state and city monitoring data, examines whether the tool reflects environmental justice disparities, and assesses its usability for scientists, policymakers, and communities. In her free time, Tamanna enjoys metalsmithing and solving crossword puzzles.
Skyler is a senior at Columbia University studying Environmental Science. Over the summer, she interned with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Chemical Sciences Laboratory studying the gas-particle partitioning of ammonium nitrate. She is continuing this work for her senior thesis with the Commane group at Lamont. After graduating college, Skyler hopes to pursue a graduate degree in the field of atmospheric chemistry. Outside of school, Skyler likes to workout, go to different restaurants, and spend time with her family
Savannah is joining the group as an REU student for summer 2020. She is from Long Island, NY, and is a senior studying Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. Her interests are piqued in meteorology and atmospheric thermodynamics. During her junior year at Cornell, she used the geospatial analysis software ENVI to determine thermal anomaly temperatures of both active and dormant volcanoes, as part of a NASA research initiative to create a comprehensive volcanic thermal output database. In addition, this past January she travelled to Nepal where she studied rural sustainability at Kathmandu University, and helped build a solar-powered water pump system which gave rural villagers access to running water. She is very excited to contribute to the group's mission and further explore her passion for atmospheric science. Outside of her academic interests, Savannah is the Vice President of the Cornell University Dance Team. She also plans to enter the US Air Force as a Weather Officer upon graduation.
My research focuses on the surface - atmospheric exchange that affects atmospheric composition.
Nichole is a senior at Columbia University studying Computational Biology. Hailing from Miami, FL, Nichole is passionate about oceanography and is interested in aerosol impacts on ocean biology, air-sea fluxes, and satellite ocean optics. Over the summer, she analyzed aerosols from the January 2025 Los Angeles fires at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, UCSD, using remote sensing and plankton tow samples. She is doing her senior thesis with the Commane lab, where she is investigating smoke plume transport and ash deposition pathways following the L.A. fires.
Born and raised in New York City, Mira Modi is a rising junior at Barnard College studying Environmental Science and working with the Commane group. Her research focuses on measuring greenhouse gas emissions from the sewer grates in New York City. When not standing near sewers with the LI-COR, she enjoys playing the violin and reading!
Hailing from Marin County, California, Jackson Bramlette is a rising junior at Columbia College studying Climate System Science with a minor in math. He has been working with the Commane group since the fall of 2024. This past summer, Jackson worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, where he worked in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area in the Trace Gas Lab. His research consisted of designing an experiment to compare the performance of iPhone and professional grade magnetometers to assess the feasibility of using Citizen Science to identify abandoned oil and gas wells scattered throughout the country.
Adrian is currently an undergraduate student at Columbia College studying computer science. He is currently working at Lamont to help write software for gathering data and analysis, and making 3D models for various projects under Róisín Commane and Nick Frearson. Outside of the lab, Adrian can commonly be found playing volleyball around the city or at the gym.
