Communication

Our group uses several channels of communication. You are expected to participate in all of them.

  • Email: All important official correspondence will happen through email. Check it regularly. Postdocs will have both a Columbia (UNI) email and a LDEO email. Please either forward one to the other or regularly check both. Students will just have a UNI email. When you start, please make sure you are on  all the appropriate email lists for LDEO, OCP and the postdoc/DEES Student lists.
  • Slack: Our group slack channel is our preferred mode of communication. It’s a way to discuss things more interactively and informally than email. It also allows for better communication in group projects. Ask any group member for an invitation to the LDEO AtmosComp (Commane group) Slack workspace and the slack workspace for collaborators. You should also join the Lamont OCP and the Earth Institute Slack channels.
  • Zoom: You will have an institutional Zoom account through Columbia. Postdoc accounts are charged per year (students are covered by DEES). Róisín will cover that cost when you are sent the invoice so please forward it to her.
  • Calendar: We have a Commane Group google calendar. Róisín puts all of her meetings on there so when you want to arrange a meeting with her, please check there for times to suggest. Ask any group member for an invitation.
  • Weekly Meetings: Every group member will meet with Róisín individually once per week. The group member will lead this discussion by sending Róisín an agenda for the meeting the night before meeting. This meeting can include everything from research to admin questions but you are expected to address how the previous week’s research goals have been achieved and proposed goals for the following week.
  • Group Meetings: Group meetings are currently held on Thursdays at 2pm. Everyone should attend group meeting as much as possible and present their ongoing research when scheduled. If you have a conflict that prevents you from attending, contact Róisín ahead of time (or she will be worried about you).
  • Online Presence: Each group member should sign up for an ORCID (www.orcid.org). This ID number is now used by many journals and funding agencies to identify researchers. Also prepare an entry for the group website based on the profiles available at: https://atmoscomp.ldeo.columbia.edu/people and send the profile information, a photo and your ORCID and UNI to Roisin. You are encouraged to include previous publications from before you joined the group.
